INTEREST ACTIVITIES 2022-2023

 

Shortly after the IAES meeting in Vienna, the first Malawi Surgical Oncology Summer school was held in Blantyre, Malawi (22-26 August 2022). This summer school was organized by Dutch and Malawian surgeons presenting topics either pre-recorded or live. The program included half a day on ENT- and thyroid tumors, with lectures and case presentations by our IAES-colleague prof. Schelto Kruijff from Groningen (NL) and dr. Wakisa from Malawi.

 

On November 5, 2022, the first Surgical Symposium on Endocrine, Breast and Oncoplastic Surgery in Nairobi, Kenya, was held at M.P. Shah Hospital under the auspices of the Surgical Society of Kenya. The entire morning session was spent on thyroid, and parathyroid tumors as well as on pancreatic neuro-endocrine tumors. Most presentations were given by Kenyan specialists from various Nairobian and regional institutions, including the Academic Hospital of the Aga Khan University. Prof. Inne Borel Rinkes from Utrecht University (NL) and Chair of INTEREST delivered a lecture on minimally invasive approaches in thyroid surgery.  

 

This was followed by a three-day visit to IAES member dr Gustave Buname and his team in Bugando Medical Center, Mwanza Tanzania, for the first educational outreach in endocrine surgery in Mwanza under the INTEREST program (Photo). The visit consisted of a variety of talks and meetings with the Bugando faculty, assisting in thyroidectomy, and presenting selected topics on endocrine surgery for staff and residents. We also engaged in discussions on how to further strengthen the team’s endocrine surgery program. 

 

March 31- April 2, 2023, an INTEREST team consisting of prof Amit Agarwal  and dr Roma Pradhan from Lucknow, India, and prof Inne Borel Rinkes attended the First Thyroid Workshop, organized by the Nepalese Association of Thyroid, Laryngology & Allied in Kathmandu Nepal. The INTEREST team was hosted as faculty by prof Toron KC, dr Chandan and prof. Deependra Shrestha. (Photo). The program consisted of a variety of presentations by faculty members and Nepalese specialists, case-based panel discussions, and a day of live surgery by prof Agarwal and dr Pradhan including interactive Q&A with the attendees.  

 

For the Malaysian Breast and Endocrine Fellowship Seminar 2023, INTEREST provided an online presentation (May 18, 2023) on updates in the management of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma, at the request of the organizers, dr. Siti Zubaidah Sharif and dr. Lee Chang Haur from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.
