IAES
Business Meeting – Brussels. 9.00 am Tuesday 28 August 2001
The
Business meeting was called to order by the President, Dr Jon van Heerden, at
9.35 am. After a brief introduction reiterating the scientific excellence of
the IAES and its prominent and pivotal role within the ISS, the President
placed before the assembled members the minutes of the 1999 Vienna Business
Meeting. These minutes were approved and accepted.
The
President presented the Membership Report congratulating the Association
Members on their co-operation in recruiting no fewer than 75 new members to the
ranks, enlarging the Association to a total membership of 393. It was resolved
to continue this recruitment campaign aiming for a target number of 500 by the
time of the next meeting in Bangkok. It was noted with regret that the deaths
had occurred of Mr Selwyn F Taylor and Dr M L K Rao and the members stood in
silence as a mark of respect.

The
Financial report was then presented by the President in the absence of the
Secretary-Treasurer, Dr Goran Akerstrom, presently recovering from his serious
illness. A tribute was paid to Dr Akerstrom’s secretary, Iva Kulhanek, for
continuing the secretarial affairs of the Association so efficiently in this
difficult period. It was noted that financial situation of the IAES was
extremely strong with assets amounting to 36,836 US dollars. The continued
significant financial support from the ISS was also recorded. The Financial
Report was approved by the members.
An
announcement was made concerning Travel Awards but of the three nominations
received only two awards were made, each of 300 US dollars to Drs Sidhu and P
Langer.
The
Program Committee Report outlined the continuing success of the IAES program
with on this occasion 199 abstracts submitted, 99 accepted, 39 for Free Paper
Presentation, 60 for Poster Display and 8 of the latter for Poster
Presentation. There was some discussion concerning the criteria for Poster
abstract submission and the President confirmed that it was a choice for
individual members whether an abstract should be submitted for oral or poster
presentation.
A brief
report was presented of the 1999 Madeira Postgraduate Endocrine Course by
Malcolm Wheeler who drew attention to the excellent continuing support of these
courses by IAES members and the hope that we would continue to expand with
future activities. It was announced that the next Postgraduate Course would be
held in Saint Jean de Luz, South West France, September 15-20, 2002 and
Professor Charles Proye, the Local Organiser for this course, gave a brief
presentation.
Changes
in the constitution of the IAES since the last biennial meeting were approved
and these related to:
Membership – in which it was agreed that this would be open to surgeons in good
professional standing with a major interest and active practice in endocrine
surgery after appropriate application and evaluation by the Membership
Committee. Membership could also be awarded to a surgeon in training expressing
a special interest in endocrine surgery. However contributions pertinent to
endocrine surgery would be an important factor in determining
membership.
- The
composition of the Publications/Program Committee had been modified deleting
the Editor of the World Journal of Surgery.
The
Nominating Committee report was presented by the President and it was agreed
that the Vice-President for the next Congress in Bangkok in 2003 would be
Professor Masayuki Imamura. Thanks was expressed to Leigh Delbridge presently
leaving the Executive Committee and proposal made and approved that he should
be replaced on the Executive by Professor Jacques Marescaux. It was also
approved that the President-Elect of the IAES should be Professor Malcolm
Wheeler.
At this
point President van Heerden officially handed over the Presidency to the
incoming President Dr Shiro Noguchi.
Finally
Dr Colin Russell proposed that the members should offer their very best wishes
to Professor Goran Akerstrom for a speedy recovery from his illness.
As
there was no other business the meeting was closed at 10.05 am.
